I just finished watching the first series of “Misfits” on Hulu. It’s a British show about a group of juvenile delinquents who get superpowers during a mysterious storm.
Superhero shows that aren’t based on an existing property like Superman are a tough sell for audiences — just ask the creators of “The Cape” or “No Ordinary Family”. “Misfits” is better than either of those shows, but it still feels a bit predictable. The nerdy outcast gets the power of invisibility, the beautiful girl is able to drive men wild with a touch, and the star runner who threw his career away over one mistake can suddenly rewind time. Not exactly thinking outside the box.
In addition, none of the kids is particularly likable. Simon is pathetic, but his actions in later episodes make it hard to sympathise with him. Alisha is too bitchy to root for, Curtis is a little bland, and I can’t understand most of what Kelly says. That leaves Nathan who I suspect is the fan favourite for his non-stop wisecracks. I admit he’s entertaining, but some degree of character growth over the first six episodes would have been nice. Maybe we’ll see that in series two, especially considering where the first season finale left him.
“Misfits” is an enjoyable take on the regular-people-get-superpowers concept, and the scripts get better over the course of the first series. I plan to continue with the second season.
I enjoy this series
